福山植物園位於宜蘭縣員山鄉與新北市烏來區的交界處， 園區湖澤蕩漾、水生植物綿延，湖面倒映著山巒與森林，景色如詩如畫；區內擁有超過千種維管束植物，及多樣的野生動物，如臺灣獼猴、山羌、鴛鴦等，動植物生態及自然景觀四季分明；園區並規劃了完善的步道，讓遊客可以輕鬆漫步於森林中，近距離觀察動植物生態；這亞洲最大的植物園，讓遊客體驗到與一般植物園或森林遊樂區完全不同的湖光山色，是國人親近自然、認識生態的絕佳去處。

老同學聚會選了很特別的福山植物園，朦朧雨霧的大清早在宜蘭市集合，一行五十幾人編成十幾輛車的長龍，浩浩蕩蕩出發上山去。
車過員山的圳頭山路就開始爬坡，馬路間而截彎取直，或者拓寬中而只剩一個車道，不過路面都舖柏油，雖然山路陡峭但還算好走；十一公里約半小時左右到達福山植物園管制站，經過入園身分檢查再耽擱約20分鐘，車再行走四公里左右，總共花了約50分鐘即到達福山植物園區。

園區寧靜且盡量保存了天然環境
福山植物園為維護保育園區的資源，兼顧遊客高品質的遊憩體驗，因而採行生態承載量之管制，除了提供遊客寧靜舒適的生態遊憩空間，並降低保育園區的人為干擾；園區內極為天然、沒看到任何販售設施，寧靜且低調地保存了自然度極高的天然環境；雖然同學們皆宜蘭人卻對福山植物園嚮往已久慕名而來。
園區有臺灣地區典型的天然闊葉樹林，以及豐富之動植物種，海拔高度400~1,400公尺之間，年平均氣溫18.5攝氏度，年平均雨量4,125毫米，年平均相對濕度94.1%，每年下雨超過200天，解說員特別強調迷濛的雨霧森林是福山植物園的本貌。
旅程中雨雖然沒間斷，但下在水生植物池的雨滴激起一圈圈漣漪、綠的紅的浮藻讓湖面泛著多彩的迷濛色澤；或者霧氣穿過林間、或者從山坡滾下，漫過迷濛的湖面，沁入好奇遊客的心脾；靜謐的、含蓄的、帶著禪意，福山植物園另一種美竟是雨霧的森林。
